What is the Alliance for Albuquerque Animals?
In 2004, more than 15,000 pets were euthanized at the City of Albuquerque Animal Care Centers. Some were terminally ill. Some were badly injured. But thousands were perfectly healthy, friendly animals who would have made wonderful pets. There just weren't enough homes for all of them. The Alliance for Albuquerque Animals is a group that works to better the lives of the homeless animals at our City’s shelters by:
- Enhancing the lives of shelter animals while under City care.
We do this by recruiting and training volunteers to help out at the shelters, to walk dogs, clean the kitty quarters, and assist people with adopting animals. We also raise money to purchase blankets, baskets, toys, and leashes. More info...
- By improving animals' chances for adoption.
One way to improve animals' chances of getting adopted is to take them out of the shelters to places where potential adopters can meet them and interact with them. This is why the Alliance organizes off site adoption events. More info...
- Reducing the number of animals admitted to the City shelters.
How do you do that? One way is through programs like our Free Spay/Neuter vouchers for low income residents of Pajarito Mesa and our Canine Comforts Campaign.
